From Desert Dreams to Digital Canvases: Crafting Captivating Backgrounds
Let me provide some insights into their creation with the following…
Conceptualization:
Before writing any code for our first platform, we crafted the audio/visual script. While working on it, I had vivid visions of our lead character Wyren's desert environment. This landscape, with its variegated layers of red rock, resembled places I'd never visited. It turns out such environments exist in the southwest of the United States, like The Wave in Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, and parts of California.
Visual Atmosphere:
I aimed to maintain a warm color palette with hints of muted greenery to convey the arid, hot, and dry feeling of the desert. I introduced screen gradients, increased contrast, and used shadows to create a post-apocalyptic atmosphere in the village.
Design Philosophy:
The backgrounds balance an illustrated look with realism. I drew inspiration from wood blocking outlining techniques and AI-generated photos, carefully combining elements to add depth. Vibrant colors and distinct palettes are used to immerse players and evoke emotions.
Emotional Connection:
My childhood home and the property I lived on was filled with burned structures and inspired the design of Sacrament Village. The village's inhabitants see their homes as more than ruins – it's their life, a perspective I cherished as a child until experiencing urban living standards. The village represents an untouched, post-apocalyptic perspective.
Future Artistic Directions:
Each part of the project will offer unique environments for player immersion. Sacrament Village is distinct, with warm tones and organic, whimsical structures. The next phase will feature cool tones, mechanical structures, and a cold, lonely atmosphere, reflecting the new season in Wyren's life.
Thank you for exploring the background artwork of Sacrament Village. Stay tuned for future posts about the game's different sections!
